ESTIMATING
DISTANCE
OBJECTIVE: Compute your average stride and you average walking speed
and use them to estimate distances.
COMPUTING YOUR AVERAGE STRIDE.
Walk at a normal speed from the two points (100 ft. apart) marked on
the sidewalk. Count to the nearest stride. Such as 15 1/2 steps would
be 16. Count and record 3 trips then figure your average number of
steps and your average step length.
1st trip = ______________
2nd tirp = _____________
3rd trip = ______________
Total = ________________ / 3 = ____________ Average number of
steps
To find average step length take the distance traveled (100 feet) and
divide it by your average number of steps.
100 / _________Average number of steps = ___________ Average step
length
COMPUTING YOUR WALKING SPEED
Walk at a normal speed from the two points (100 ft. apart) marked on
the sidewalk. Use a stopwatch to time how long it takes to get from
one point to another. Do this for three trips and find the average
time to walk the distance.
1st trip = ______________
2nd tirp = _____________
3rd trip = ______________
Total = ________________ / 3 = ____________ Average time
To find the feet per second that you travel, divide 100 feet y the
average time and round to the nearest tenth of a foot.
100 / _________Average time = ___________ Average feet per
second.
Next calculate your average walking speed in feet per minute by
multiplying by 60
____________Feet per second * 60 = _____________feet per minute
ESTIMATE THE FOLLOWING DISTANCES BY COUNTING
STEPS...
1. Find the distance from the east door in front of room 13
to the West wall in front of the library. (Round to nearest tenth of
a foot)
________Number of steps * _______Average step length = _______Total
length
2. Find the distance from the North door in the hallway to the
incline part of the hall in front of the office. (Round to nearest
tenth of a foot)
________Number of steps * _______Average step length = _______Total
length
3. Find the length of the outside of the sidewalk from the doorway at
the North end of the middle school, walking South, to the end of the
building. (Round to nearest tenth of a foot)
________Number of steps * _______Average step length = _______Total
length
ESTIMATE THE FOLLOWING DISTANCE BY USING YOUR
AVERAGE WAKING SPEED....
4. From the South end of the building walking North, find the
length of the building. (Round to the nearest foot)
________Time in minutes * ___________Average walking
speed = _____________Total length
