Karen Kelso

Girard Middle School Counselor

I graduated from Girard High School in 1990 and continued my education at PSU where I earned my Bachelor of Science in Education.  I then taught middle school language arts and social studies in Eureka, Kansas for four years.  My husband's career advancement then took us to the Newton, Kansas area.  While there I taught middle school language arts for a year at Prairie Hills Middle School before taking a middle school social studies position at Hesston Middle School.  I spent four years at HMS as a teacher then transitioned to a middle school counselor at HMS after completing my Masters degree at Emporia State University.
When our daughter was one, we decided to move back to Southeast Kansas. With that transition came the transition to high school level counseling at Pittsburg High School where I stayed for seven years before asking to be allowed to move to elementary counseling at George Nettels Elementary.  It was during my first and only year as an elementary counselor that I learned of the new full-time middle school counseling position in Girard.  2018-2019 is my sixth year at GMS, and I am happy to be back at the middle level and back in my hometown.
I have one daughter, Kaitlyn, who attends Girard High School and keeps us busy with volleyball and band activities.   My husband, Keaton, is the owner of  K&K Outfitters, and together we own and operate Little Aruba Bed and Breakfast.   In my spare time, I love to travel, spend time with my family, read, run/exercise, be creative with landscaping/gardening, and cook.
