Brenda Rose - Brenda played for the Lady Trojans from 1982 thru 1986. She went on to play basketball at Missouri Southern State College and Calvary Bible College in Kansas City. Amanda Davied - Amanda played for the Lady Trojans from 1995 thru 1999. She went on to play for Pittsburg State University where she also score 1000 points. Morgan
High - Morgan played for the Lady Trojans from 1996 thru 2000.
She went to Kansas State University on a track scholarship and is also
a 3 time state champion in track and field in the
high jump and holds the Class 4A record in that event. Mike Taylor - Mike played for the Trojans from 1970 thru 1973. He went on to play for three years at Pittsburg State Jay Leigh - Jay played for the Trojans from 1982 thru 1985 as a varsity player. He played on back to back state qualifying teams his junior and senior year and continued his career at Ft. Scott Community College. Gabe Evans - Gabe played for the Trojans from 1995 thru 1998. He played on the 1998 conference championship team and was an all conference and all state player as well. Nikki
Pierce - Nikki, a 2003 graduate of Girard High School, and a
member of the Pitt- State Women's Basketball team, was the 7th member
of the Girard High School 1000 pt. club. Nikki in reaching the 1000 pt.
plateau her Sr. year, was a 3 yr. all league performer, a 2 yr. all-state
honoree, and a 2 yr. Joplin-Globe all-area selection. Niki was also chosen
to play in the All-star game. Nikki was a 4 yr. letter winner, and led
a very young Lady Trojan Basketball team to a class 4A Sub state runner-up
in 2003. In addition to basketball Nikki was also a 3 yr. Ietter winner
in Volleyball, and was a instrumental part of 2 sub state championship. Marissa Poppe (2006) - Drew played volleyball and basketball for the Trojans from 2002 thru 2006. She was a vital part of Girard Trojan athletics. She atteded Pittsburg State University where she played for 4 years. Drew Cook (2007) - Drew played football and basketball for the Trojans from 2003 thru 2007. He was a vital part of Girard Trojan athletics. Tanner Poppe (2009) - Tanner played basketball and baseball for the Trojans. He was vital part of the 3 state basketball trophys that the team won. He went on to attend KU on a baseball scholarship. Darian Kelly (2009) - Darian played basketball and football for the Trojans. He was vital part of the 3 state basketball trophys that the team won. He went on to attend Pittsburg State University. Twarog (2010) -
Carly played volleyball and basketball for the Trojans. She helped
lead the lady Trojan basketball team to their first and second state
appearances, placing 3rd the second year. Throughout her basketball
career, the team was undefeated in CNC play for 4 years. She also
helped to lead the volleyball team to 3 state appearances.
Coaching
Honors Sunny Pierce - On Dec. 3, 2001, at the Iola pre-season tournament, the Lady Trojans defeated the Louisburg Wildcats. This win marked the "300th win" in Lady Trojan basketball, under the leadership of Coach Sunny Pierce. Coach Pierce became the head coach of the Lady Trojans in 1980 and since then has averaged 15 wins a year. Coach Pierce came to Girard after a tremendous career at Pittsburg State in womens basketball, and is a member of the Pittsburg State Athletic Hall of Fame. The Lady Trojans won 5 league championships and had numerous all league, all area, and all state selections under Coach Pierce. Joe Neopte - Coach Nepote retired in the spring of 2003 after being employed as a math teacher and coach since 1972. Mr. Nepote in 32 years of service has played a major part in the success of Lady Trojan Basketball, as well as the football and track teams at both the junior high and high school level. As an assistant to Coach Sunny Pierce, he has also been the Head Girls Middle School Coach at both the 7th and 8th grade level. Coach Nepote has been an instrumental part of over 300 wins at the high school level, and setting the foundation for a very successful middle school program as well. Coach Nepote and his wife and family have sacrificed and given a great deal to the Girard school system and athletic programs the past 32 years and we admire and appreciate his loyalty, time, and effort a tremendous amount. Other Honors Chuck Pope -Chuck was a two time all conference, all state, and all area selection as an offensive and defensive lineman and was a part of the 3 league champions. His senior year his team finished 10-1. He went on to play at Coffeyville Junior College where he was a member of the 1990 Junior College National Championship Team. He was a team captain, voted all conference, and 2nd team all-american, and awarded the Kansas Junior College, all-sports outstanding athlete award. He continued his career for 2 years at Baylor University, where he was a 2 year starter at center, a member of the 1992 Sun Bowl Championship Team, and two time all Southwest conference selection, and an honorable mention all-American. Chuck went on to coach both at the University of Tulsa and Blinn Junior College, where he was a part of the 1996 National Championship Team, and coached the National JuCo Defensive player of the year, and two all-Americans. Abby Friggeri - Abby was the class 4A state champion in cross country her sophomore year (1986). She was also able to place at the state level in cross country and track and field all four years of her high school career. She finished 2nd in the 1600meter twice and 3rd once, and 2nd in the 3200 meter. She was part of 3 state qualifying 4x400 meter teams. She is a school record holder in 3 individual events, the 1600 meter, the 3200 meter and the 5000 meter, and 2 relay events, the 3200 meter relay and the medley relay. She was alos part of 4 league championships, the 1997 team which placed 2nd at State, and a regional runner-up team. Morgan High - Morgan was a 3 time state champion in the high jump, her Freshman, Sophomore and Junior year, as well as state runner up her Senior year in class 4A. She owns the 4A and school record at 5'10" and throughout her career she was listed as one of the top high jumpers in the nation. In addition to the high jump, she qualified for state in the long jump, and was on our school record 4x400 relay team which also qualified. Morgan was part of 4 league championships, the 1997 regional championship team which placed 2nd in state, and two regional runnerup teams. Morgan attended K-State on a track scholarship, and has qualified for the Drake relays, an invite only meet based on performance, and has won one meet where she cleared 6'. She also was a 4 year starter in basketball and was honored as one of our 1000 point scorers. She was an all league, all state, and all area basketball player as well. Beatriz De Olano - Bea was a foreign exchange student from Barcelona Spain during the 2000-01 school year. She was the class 4A individual state champion in women's golf and lead the team to the class 4A regional championship and the 3rd place class 4A-1A team trophy. The 1963 - 4x400 Relay Team - This team won the class A state championship with a time of 3:30:00. The team consisted of: Nelson Anderson - Nelson was a 4 year member of the track team and participated in football for 3 years. Jerry Hudson - Jerry was a 3 sport athlete, participating in football, basketball, and track all 4 years. He continued his athletic carreer at Pittsburg State where he was a 4 year letterman in both track and field and football. Roger Zettl - Roger was a 4 year member of the track team and the football team. He went on to play football at the junior college in Parsons. Raymond Scammel. Bill Garrett - Bill was a 3 time class 3A state Champion in the high Jump his sophomore, junior, and senior year and held the state high jump record at 6'8". He is still the current school record holder at 6'8". He is also a co-record holder with Greg Evans in the long jump. He also praticipated in basketball. Dan Smith - Dan was a 3 sport letterman in high school earning letters in basketball, football, and baseball. He was a 3 year starter in baseball, a 2 time 1st team all league pitcher, an all-class 1st team all state pitcher, a Joplin Globe all area 1st team selection, was voted as the Kansas player of the year in 1993, selected to play in the Kansas Baseball Coaches All-Star game, and invited to the USA Olympic Trials, and was voted the Midwest Gatorade player of the year. He was drafted in 1993 by the Texas Rangers and stayed with them from 1993 through 1998 moving up through their system, winning league championships in the Gulf coast nad the Texas league. In 1999 he made his major league debut with the Montreal Expos. He pitched a 3 hit win over the Boston Red Sox setting an Olympic stadium rookie strike out record. Mark Hammerbacker - Mark was the class 4A, 1993 state champion in the 100m dash and placed rth in the same event in 1992. He was also part of the 4x100 relay which was a 2 time state qualifer. He was also a 4 year letterman in football. He was a 2 year all conference, Joplin Globe all area, and class 4A all state selection at defensive end. Dustin Smith - Dustin was a 3 sport player in baseball, basketball, and football. He was a 4 year starter in baseball and a 4 year all conference catcher. He was a Joplin Globe all area 1st team catcher, and was selected by the Texas Rangers in the 1999 draft. He attended Cowley County Junior College on a baseball scholarship, was a 2 year starter as catcher, and 2 time all conference catcher. He was part of 2 conference titles, one regional title, and a 3rd place World Series finish. He was then again drafted by the Texas Rangers. Allen Bruenjes - Allen is a 1953 graduate of Girard High School, and was the 1953 class 3A state champion in the javelin with a toss of 187 ft. (A javelin that is not as aerodynamic as today's, Allen described it as a stick.) In addition to his state championship, Allen was also a 1st team "All Class" basketball player, the only one to date in school history, and received all league honors in both basketball and football. Upon graduation, Allen attended Kansas State Teachers College in Pittsburg, KS (Now PSU) from 1953-1955, lettering in track. In 1955 Allen was invited to a three day mini-camp tryout in Bentonville, Arkansas and this resulted in him signing a contract with the Cardinal organization. He played in the Georgia-Florida, and the Georgia State League for the 1955 and 1956 seasons. Upon completion of his athletic endeavors, Allen returned to Frontenac where his parents were living and started a family. He is currently retired from the U.S. postal service. Allen has four children, who all had outstanding athletic careers. Keith, David, Yvette, and Yvonne. Allen was coached by the late Guito Doc Saccine and Frank Jamson. Wendee Lentz - Wendee graduated from Girard in 1989 as an Honor student and member of the National Honor Society. She lettered in Basketball (3yrs), Volleyball (2yrs), Track (3yrs), Softball (1yr) and Band (4yrs). She graduated from PSU in 1993 with a Bachelors in Biology. While at PSU she served as a student athletic trainer under the Hall of Fame Athletic Trainer Al Ortolani. She became a certified trainer in 1994. She graduated from Oklahoma State University with a Master's Degree in Health Promotions in 1996. She served as the Pittsburg Athletic Trainer in 1996 and 1997 managing the women's sports. In 1997 she moved to Oklahoma City to work at the University of Oklahoma. In the past several years she has worked as the trainer for the College World Series of softball, the OU women's basketball team and helps with the Oklahoma County Special Olympics and the Okalhoma Endeavor Games. She was also appointed as a member of the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. Leah Shireman - Leah is a 2001 Graduate of Girard High School. She holds the GHS discus record at 127' 7" and the javelin record at 135' 7". She attended Johnson County Community College where she was the conference champion in the javelin, runner up in the hammer throw, and third in the discus. She was a NJCAA All-American, and held the farthest throw during the 2002 season of 148' 9". She then attended Pittsburg State University where she lettered 3 years throwing the javelin. She was the conference champion in 2003 and 2005 and runner up in 2004. She was the runner up at the 2004 National Championships and 5th at the 2003 and 2005 NCAA National Championships.
