    USD 248 District Information
     
    Physical Description:
    Girard Unified School District 248 is a rural school district comprising 263 square miles located in the southeast corner of Kansas. The majority of the land is used for agricultural purposes and is situated in Crawford County, with a small northwestern portion of the district being in Neosho County. The District has three schools:

    R. V. Haderlein Elementary School
    Grades Pre-K thru 5
    Approximately 492 Students
    Built in 1954 - additions in 1972, 1974, 1978-79, 1987, 1995-96

    Girard Middle School

    Grades 6-8
    Approximately 250 students
    Converted to a middle school in 1962 - additions in 1964, 1966-67, 1995-96

    Girard High School
    Grades 9-12
    Approximately 293 students
    Rebuilt after a fire on October 24, 1964 - additions in 1966-67, 1995-96

    Enrollment Data:
    The district currently serves approximately 1,035 students and enrollment is stable. Of those students, 45% are bused to school, and 48% qualify for free and reduced lunches. The average number of students per grade level is 90.


    Personnel Description:
    USD 248 currently includes four administrators: Mr. Blaise Bauer, Superintendent; Mr. Todd Ferguson, high school Principal; Mr. Tom Stegman, high school assistant Principal. Mr. Brannon Kidd, middle school Principal; and Mr. Mark LaTurner, elementary school Principal
    Mrs. Tina Peak, elementary school assistant Principal. The district also employs two full-time technology staff: Mr. Rick Duling, technology coordinator; Mrs. Cindy Murphy, integration specialist, a registered nurse, and a registered dietitian. USD 248 has 74 certified teachers whose teaching experience within the district averages 15 years. Those teachers' total teaching experience, including service in other districts, averages 16.6 years. The highest educational degree attainment for the certified staff is 50.7% with bachelor's degrees, 39.4% with master's degrees, 7.0% with specialist in education degrees, and 2.8% with doctor of philosophy degrees. Continued post-graduate education and inservice staff development are perceived as important by both teachers and administrators.

    Girard High School Basketball Queen candidates for 2016 are Falynn DeWitt, daughter of Willis DeWitt and of Sherry and Earnie Ferguson; Caitlin Chiartano, daughter of Randy and Marilyn Chiartano; Morgan Harris, daughter of Brett and Micah Harris and of Christi and Adam Yockey; and Zoey Guenther, daughter of Amy Perez and of Micah Guenther.     Nolan O'Toole (Integration Specialist) introduces GHS students to the features of their new MacBook Airs. GHS is currently piloting these devices with a small group of seniors to determine their impact on teaching and learning. The data gathered from this pilot will be used to help make future technology decisions at USD 248.

    After advancing from district and state levels, Heidi Burns and Cailie Logue competed in National STAR Event competition in Washington, D.C., July 5-9. They competed in the category "Promote and Publicize FCCLA" against students from across the United States. During competition Ms. Burns and Ms. Logue gave a presentation on how they promoted the Girard FCCLA chapter throughout the year. Events highlighted included FCCLA Fall and State Leadership conferences, American Red Cross blood drives, the Scholarship Color Run, and volunteer work at Ronald McDonald House and the SEK Humane Society. These ladies received the highest honor of top gold with an overall score of 96 out of a possible 100. This was their first year competing in a STAR Event.FCCLA adviser Emily Herlocker said, "It is very rare to have so much success in your first year of competition, especially at the national level. They surpassed all my expectations. “It was a great learning experience by competing against the best students in the country. With the venue being in Washington, D.C., the ladies had the opportunity to learn about the nation’s capital and see sights they have only seen in textbooks."
